Disruptions in life may be negative, or positive. Knowing the history of how the U.S. and other countries were colonized after the Pope's 1493 Doctrine of Discovery is a positive disruption for the U.S. today. The Doctrine of Discovery gave legal license to white, Christian, European explorers and settlers to seize the lands of the indigenous people and enslave them along with Blacks who were trafficked to the U.S. from Africa. Did this history encourage white supremacy?

Very thoughtful and concise presentation, Jonathan. To know that we as a nation are still carrying out the Doctrine of DIscovery after 400 years, albeit in more subtle ways that are enshrined in our institutions is, of course, very disheartening, to put it mildly. But when we now see the voice of White Supremacy raising its ugly head in the open, pontificated by Radical Right pundits on a national level, it becomes even more so. The referred to "unpleasant" aspects of our American history that you are offering up for consideration are now being erased from school textbooks. I thus applaud you to keep doing what you are doing, lest we lose sight of where we have come from…
